The Orchard Recovery Center offers a multi-disciplinary treatment program rooted in a holistic, bio-psycho-social approach to recovery. We support clients every step of the way, from detox and stabilization through developing healthy routines and preparing for a meaningful life beyond treatment. Our flexible lengths of stay begin with a 12-day introduction, which may include detox, and stabilization, followed by 28 and 42 day programs designed to help you build a strong and lasting foundation for recovery.

Jess Malkin

Primary Care Clinical Director

In 2011, Jess was awarded a Master of Social Work (MSW) from the University of Toronto with a specialization in mental health and addictions. Prior to this degree, Jess earned a Master of Arts at York University where she was awarded a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) grant for her research on mood and anxiety disorders. Jess received her clinical training at Toronto General Hospital (General Medicine) and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), one of the world’s leading psychiatric research hospitals. While at the CAMH, Jess was trained in Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) for the treatment of substance use disorders and concurrent eating disorders. In addition to her clinical work, Jess worked as a research coordinator in the psychology department at Ryerson University and co-investigated several grant funded research projects. Jess has received various awards for excellence in mental health research and has presented her work at several academic conferences. Jess is proficient in a variety of therapeutic interventions including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), psychodynamically oriented therapy and dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT). In her role as Clinical Program Director, Jess works collaboratively with our dynamic team of clinicians to continually upgrade our curriculum with the latest research and best practices in substance disorder and concurrent disorders treatment.

Dr. Adam Chodkiewicz Orchard Recovery Center Psychiatrist

Dr. Adam Chodkiewicz

Orchard Psychiatrist

MD, FRCP(C), DABAM

Dr. Chodkiewicz, or “Dr. C,” is a psychiatrist, licensed to practice medicine in the province of British Columbia. He was former staff at St. Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver, where he practiced inpatient psychiatry for 17 years and was the former Division Head of adult inpatient psychiatric services and Interim Physician Program Director. In addition to Dr. Chodkiewicz’s work with Orchard Recovery Center clients, he is now the Regional Medical Lead of Concurrent Disorders for the Vancouver Coastal Health Region. He is on active staff at Vancouver General Hospital, where he is a member of both the Psychiatry Consultation-Liaison and Complex Pain and Addiction services. Many of the patients he has cared for have suffered from concurrent addiction disorders as well as neurological and cognitive deficits from many sources, including brain injury, as well as having multiple additional psychiatric illnesses such as major depressive disorder, psychotic disorders and various manifestations of post-traumatic stress disorder. Dr. Chodkiewicz was a consultant psychiatrist for the Anxiety Disorder Clinic at the University of British Columbia for nine years. Patients seen at this clinic often had complex treatment-refractory anxiety conditions, such as OCD and PTSD, that required both pharmacotherapy as well as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Dr. Chodkiewicz completed one year of post-residency CBT training at UBC and subsequently provided many years of CBT treatment to patients as well as structured lectures, CBT training and clinical case supervision to psychiatric residents. Dr. Chodkiewicz has an appointment in the Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia, at the level of Clinical Assistant Professor; in this capacity he has an active and continuous role in the direct teaching and supervision of both medical students and residents in medicine and psychiatry. Dr. Chodkiewicz has also clinically worked in the field of addiction medicine for 27 years and continues to manage patients in the community using opiate agonist treatment (OAT) and integrated psychiatric treatment. Dr. Chodkiewicz provides preceptor training to physicians that have interests in addiction treatment and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Addiction Medicine (DABAM).

Miles Rubin

Addiction Counsellor

Miles is a registered social worker with over 20 years of clinical experience specializing in adolescents, emerging adults, parents and families in a variety of addiction and mental health settings. He values client-centered care, and strives to meet clients respectfully and compassionately where they are on their journey. Miles utilizes a variety of treatment modalities such as ACT, DBT, mindfulness, and Motivational Interviewing to help clients build on existing strength and resiliency. Miles has worked with individuals in both inpatient and outpatient mental health settings across Canada. He began his counseling career working with Vancouver’s Odyssey Program, one of Canada’s first youth focused harm reduction addiction programs. While working at The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto, he focused on supporting those struggling with psychosis and concurrent disorders. Most recently, he has been providing therapy to children, youth and families with mental health and addiction challenges with the IWK Health Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Throughout his career, he has trained professionals on addiction, mental health and trauma informed care. He was part of the IWK Health Centre’s Concurrent Disorder leadership team, and has acted as a coach and trainer for trauma informed care at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). Miles received his Bachelors of Social Work in 2001 from St. Thomas University in Fredericton, New Brunswick, and his Masters of Social Work in 2013 from Ryerson University in Toronto. He practices with an anti-oppressive framework and acknowledges how identities such as race, gender, sexual identity and economic background impact the lived realities of his clients. Miles likes collecting old dusty soul records; swimming in the ocean; sitting around a campfire; basketball; listening to the wisdom of his two young kids; and not taking himself too seriously.
