Drug Dealer: From Prescription Painkillers to Heroin
Featured in SOS Safety Magazine - January 17, 2017
When Macklemore dropped the track “Drug Dealer” (ft. Ariana DeBoo), he called out ‘big pharma’ (multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical companies) and shined a light on the dark politics of America’s opioid addiction.
In this haunting song, Macklemore tackles questions of how so many have come to be addicted to painkillers, and why so many are dying of drug overdoses. He specifically names Purdue right before the hook of the song: “My drug dealer was a doctor… Had the plug from big pharma… He said that he could heal me, but it only gave me problems…”

Considering the fact that active alcoholism and drug addiction aren’t exactly the ideal ingredients for gingerbread houses and roasting chestnuts on an open fire, we say absolutely.

The Orchard to Host Public Meeting on Fentanyl
Featured in the Bowen Island Undercurrent - September 8, 2016
“This drug is pervasive,” says Reverend Shelagh MacKinnon of Fentanyl. “At the Orchard, we are seeing clients die in relapses. It’s affecting people across the spectrum. A sixteen year old recently died in Starbucks of a Fentanyl overdose. How much worse can it get? We need to be talking about it.”
British Columbia declared a public health emergency on the drug in April, after more than 200 overdose deaths in three months. Bowen Islanders are concerned and have been approaching MacKinnon to talk about it. This is the impetus behind an upcoming public meeting hosted by the Orchard Recovery Center (where MacKinnon is a spiritual advisor) at Collins Hall on Fentanyl.
