Billy and Jimmy: Meet the Goats Making Recovery Special

Billy – Recovery Goat
At the Orchard Recovery Center, located on the peaceful Bowen Island, healing extends beyond therapy and structured programs. Among the unique experiences here are two special residents: Billy and Jimmy, our Nigerian Dwarf goats. These friendly animals bring a touch of country life to the journey of recovery, connecting clients with simple, grounding joys.
A Reflection of Care and Connection
Billy and Jimmy joined the Orchard in 2021 as 8-week-old kids from Crestar Farms. Now three years old, they have become a cherished part of life here. One client shared, “I knew that if this place had animals, like goats, then the people here must be caring.” Their presence reflects the warmth and genuine support that define the Orchard experience.
Meet Billy and Jimmy: Gentle Companions in Recovery

Jimmy – Recovery Goat
Nigerian Dwarf goats are known for their friendly and playful personalities. Billy and Jimmy bring smiles to everyone they meet. Whether clients walk them to the meadow, brush their coats, or simply greet them by the goat pen, these interactions provide a lighthearted break from the deeper emotional work of recovery.
Goats are increasingly recognized for their therapeutic value. Studies show that interacting with animals can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and increase feelings of well-being. Billy and Jimmy’s curious, gentle demeanor helps clients feel present and connected, offering moments of uncomplicated joy and balance.
One client reflected, “Walking the goats was the first time I smiled in months.” During our alumni Christmas party, another client shared, “I am grateful for Billy and Jimmy.” Whether it’s a meaningful interaction or a simple smile, the goats offer something special to each person.
Balancing Inner Work with Simple Joys
The Orchard’s approach to recovery includes intensive therapy and emotional introspection, which can be demanding. Billy and Jimmy provide a natural counterbalance, offering clients a moment to step back and engage with nature. These small interactions, whether walking the goats or watching them play, create a grounding effect that complements the clinical work.
Bowen Island, often called the Island of Walks and Wellness, provides an ideal setting for recovery. Just 20 minutes from West Vancouver’s Horseshoe Bay, its serene surroundings enhance the therapeutic environment, creating a unique blend of professional care and the restorative power of nature.
Why Choose Orchard Recovery Center?
