Addiction is a disease more common than you think. This month on CKNW, we will tell the stories of addiction through the voices of two people in recovery in our series, Journey to a Life of Recovery.
In today’s episode we will meet two addicts who discuss their descent in alcoholism. After we hear their stories, we will speak with an addiction counsellor from The Orchard Recovery Center about the complexities of addiction.
Susie Newman – Addiction counsellor with The Orchard Recovery Center
Susie Newman is a member of the Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation and earned her Certificate in Counselling for Alcohol and Substance Abuse in 2008. Prior to emigrating from Ireland in 2004, Susie facilitated groups at St. Patrick’s Hospital, Dublin, and in the Central Mental Hospital for the Criminally Insane, where she worked with inmates having concurrent addiction issues. Susie’s personal experiences with addiction give her a deeper understanding and empathy for her clients, and help her more fully engage and challenge them. She is passionate about her work and enjoys helping clients realize that a life beyond their wildest dreams is possible.

Barb Metcalfe – Director of Family Programs with Orchard Recovery Center
Barb Metcalfe has worked extensively with marginalized women and men in the areas of addiction, domestic violence and life skills management. Drawing on extensive personal and professional experience, Metcalfe empowers clients to identify the obstacles standing in the way of their recovery and to establish the skills necessary to overcome them. In addition to her work as a counsellor, Metcalfe is the Director of Family Programs at the Orchard. She is passionate about helping families and couples examine their unhealthy patterns of relating and facilitating their movement toward more supportive, healthy relationships. Metcalfe is also a member of the Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation.

Quintin Anthony – Director of Continuing Care with Orchard Recovery Center
Quintin is a member of the Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation and a Certified Youth Counsellor. He brings to the Orchard team years of experience working with men, women and families struggling with addiction. He has a reality-based approach that comes from a sense of empathy, compassion and the belief that addiction is treatable through love and guidance. Quintin’s disarming approach to dealing with resistance and engaging clients in the process of recovery is both fun and unique. Respectful but challenging, he gets clients to the core issues that are holding them back from wellness. He is passionate about his role as an addictions counsellor and finds it rewarding to watch others receive the gift of life again.
